Diarrhoea and Vomiting

In adults and older children

Diarrhoea is usually due to a viral infection and normally gets better in two to three days. Drink plenty of clear fluids – small quantities taken frequently are best.

Small children and babies with diarrhoea

Small children and babies with diarrhoea need to be watched carefully to make sure they do not get too dried out. Stopping solid foods and giving plenty of clear fluids (special solutions such as Dioralyte are available for babies) usually helps. Breast fed babies should continue to have breast milk. Consult the doctor if symptoms are severe or a young child continues to vomit for more than 12 to 24 hours and you are concerned.
